Running my ass off

For the last six months, I have spent more time running than doing any other activity. It started as a way to just start moving again and to help get through a very difficult patch in my life. My weight and fitness level was something I could control completely. Running may not be my favorite thing in the world to do, but it has grown on me.

I got involved after watching advertisement after advertisement for the Commit to be Fit 5K, which was run back in May. As part of a program through the local YMCA, Giant Eagle, and the television station sponsor (WBNS), I got myself a trainer and started logging miles.

The first few weeks were a struggle as I adjusted to the action of running. In the process it was discovered that I have an issue with my right hip which not only caused my stride to be off, but to cause a lot of pain. Stregnthening exercises and stretches have resulted in my being able to run without pain for a considerable amount of time. Combined with figuring out a breathing pattern, I'm learning to enjoy the freedom in running.

I'm not going to go into detail here about everything I've gone through to this point. Instead, I'm taking this time to establish where I was and how far I've come. When I started, and this is the first time I'm admitting this, I weighed 210 pounds. In six months, and at least 2 miles run every other day, I lost 30 pounds. It's an amazing feeling.

In the next few months, as I continue to run, logging more miles per run, and increasing the amount of weight lifting I do, I will lose another 15 pounds. My goal now isn't to run a specific distance or be a specific weight, instead it is to just continue as I am and pushing myself beyond what I think I can do. I'm going to start blogging more often about this journey and offering what advice I can.

Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Ohio Strides for Hope 2013

As a side note, I'm running in the Columbus Strides for Hope 5K on September 8th. I'm raising funds for the Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Ohio, the benefactor of the event. My mother is a survivor of cervical and ovarian cancer and I am running for her. If you would like to donate, you can do it here. Any amount is greatly appriciated.
