Great bits

"The goal in life should be never to enter into `real life.' That's when you know that you no longer have a life."

It was posted as a reply to a friend's facebook status earlier today. We go through school preparing for "real life". It's beaten into us that you do not enter the magical world that is "real life" until after you finish school. However long that takes you. The real life that they always talk about is a very depressing place. Why would you ever want your children to aspire to it?

Real life is the system of going to work, working at a job that you most likely hate, driving home in rush hour traffic, spending the evening in front of the television knowing in the morning it starts again. Real life is not full of friends. There is rarely time for fun. When you do have time off, you don't want to do anything because finally you have time to sleep. Real life is full of bills and more responsibility than any one person should be required to handle. Imagination has no place in real life. Slowly you forget what it was like to imagine fighting dragons and attacking monsters or flying to space in a cardboard box. Real life is not a fun place, especially now.

I say encourage your kids to stay in school. Never leave it. Real life is depressing and long. Yeah school can be hard, but it is where you can still be a kid. It is where as a 21 year old college junior you dress up for Halloween again and rock a costume all day. It's where when you show up in your girlfriend's Halloween costume (an Anime princess) no one questions you. In real life out there in the real world, you would be seen as the weird one and be alienated from everyone. Your boss might call you into his/her office to talk.

While you can stay away from real life. The only life that is worth living is the one where you can be you and no one questions it.
